Gary Nixon wins the Springfield Mile in Illinois watched by a crowd of nearly 30,000. Earlier in the day Bill Corbin of Ohio and San Francisco's Rick Vetter both died in a 5-bike crash. The Springfield Mile was cancelled for the next 15 years.
