Effie Hotchkiss and her mother Avis left Brooklyn, New York on the adventure of a lifetime. The mother and daughter duo were bound for San Francisco, California on a new 1915 Harley-Davidson V-twin with sidecar that Effie had recently purchased.

John Dolphin CBE dies Whitchurch-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, aged 67.
Inventor of the Welbike whilst commanding SOE "Station IX" at Welwyn, he also invented midget submarines. An Ariel Square Four rider, he founded Corgi Motorcycle Co Ltd in 1946 before becoming Chief Engineer at the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment.
